Yvoire France - a little town on the shores of lake Geneva

June 28,2000, Wednesday - Travel to Yvoire

This morning we loaded the bike boxes, the assembled bike, and our luggage into the rental car we picked up in Italy and headed through the Alps of France to the little village of Yvoire. Yvoire is medieval French village on the lake near Geneva. Today the weather in Chamois started out with heavy rainy, which diminished as the day wore on and we got closer to Geneva. Even though it wasn't raining when we arrived in Yvoire, we kept pretty close our fancy little geranium covered hotel and kept our raincoats handy. Other than surprise at the size of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) there really isn't much to say for the day. Hopefully we'll have a nice day for exploring the area tomorrow.

Today the weather was clear and warm, in this sleepy little town. Dorothy and I spent most of the morning just puttering around in Yvoire, taking pictures and enjoying the little shops.

At about noon we decided to take a drive into city of Geneva to scope out the route to the Hertz drop off point and to the train station. Geneva is located at the base of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) where the wide, and fast moving Rhone River exits the long narrow glacial lake. A well known a landmark in Geneva is the giant fountain at the end of the lake. We don't know how tall the fountain is, but it dwarfs the 10 story buildings that surround the edge of the lake. Downtown Geneva is a busy bustling place and it's a good thing we checked out our route. It took us several miss steps before we actually found the downtown Hertz location, where we need to drop the car at 9:00am tomorrow morning. After rehearsing our route we drove up the eastern coast of the Lake visiting the little villages, and towns of the area.

The next step in our itinerary is to ride the train out of the Alps on the central-eastern edge of France to the Burgundy wine region in the southwestern region of France. To prepare for this long rail leg of the trip we took a couple of hours to clean the road gunk off the bike and packed it back into its shipping boxes. This makes us less mobile, but makes traveling by train much easier, which will be important for tomorrows 10-hour train journey across the width of France.

After packing the bike, we continued to simply relaxing in this charming little town. If you're looking for a quiet relaxing romantic little town Yvoire would be a very good choice.
